Healing Doesn’t Mean Forgetting: Gentle Ways to Cherish Your Pet While You Heal

by | Sep 10, 2026 | Pet Loss | 0 comments

Quick Recap: Healing from pet loss doesn’t mean letting go of your pet’s memory. Four gentle ways to keep them close while you heal: display their photo somewhere you’ll see it daily, say their name out loud, light a candle on meaningful days, and share their story with others. Grief and love can exist together.

Losing a pet is losing a piece of your daily life. The morning greeting, the spot on the couch, the sound of their paws on the floor. It makes sense that healing can feel scary, like it means letting them fade.

It doesn’t. Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means finding ways to carry them with you as you move forward. Here are four gentle ways to do that.`

Display Their Photo

Keep a favorite photo somewhere you’ll see it every day. A shelf, a frame, your phone lock screen, anywhere that makes you smile when you see it. Let their face be part of your everyday view, not something tucked away.

Say Their Name Out Loud

Saying their name keeps them part of your everyday life. Tell a new friend about them. Say good morning to their photo. Their name doesn’t have to disappear from your vocabulary just because they’re not physically here anymore.

Light a Candle on Hard Days

You can light a candle on their birthday, on the day you said goodbye, or honestly, whenever it helps. There’s no wrong day to light one. It’s a small, quiet way to mark that they mattered and still do. Honestly, I light my candle almost every day for my gal Baby who passed a year and a half ago.

Share Their Story

Talk about the good memories. Tell people what made them, them. The funny habits, the way they greeted you, the little things only you knew. Share with a safe friend who also loves their pet and share with me, with us, in the comments, share wherever feels right. I always love hearing about the pets who’ve touched someone’s life.

Grief isn’t something you get over. It’s something you learn to carry differently, and love is what makes that carrying possible. If you’d like to understand better why it hurts so much, please see this article from Psychology Today.

And if you’re looking for a tangible way to hold onto your pet’s memory, a pet portrait etching, handcrafted from your own snapshot, is one more way to keep them close, made from something as personal as their paw print or a piece of their fur. I have clients tell me that they talk to their portrait or stop and say good morning as they pass it by.

Our pet loss packages that include an etched portrait AND a candle together are especially appreciated as well for gifting.

Pet loss grief is valid and real. You are in good company here. Tell me in the comments: what’s your favorite way to remember your very loved pet companion?

Healing doesn’t mean forgetting.
