This handcrafted custom dog portrait was for TED, the adorable sheepdog who stole hearts far and wide!
Custom Dog Portrait of a very special pup:
Ted was a therapy dog that also helped spread the word about Dogs on Deployment (DoD). Dogs On Deployment is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit that provides an online network for service members to search for volunteers who are willing to board their pets during their owner’s service commitments. Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, life-long pet ownership by military pet owners by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency.
Ted’s mom, who happens to be on the team at DoD shared with me, “…we lost him suddenly a month shy of his 4th birthday. I can honestly say that Ted had the best 3 years and 11 months we could have given him. He traveled up and down the east coast, swam in the Gulf and Atlantic, high fived the Governor of the state of Virginia (and kissed the first lady in the mouth), had a statue named in his honor at a hotel in Chicago, brought so much joy to our troops on the home front and touched the lives of more people than I ever could have imagined.”
Good boy, Ted! You made such a difference even in a few short years! The team at Dogs on Deployment was hurting for Ted’s mom and sent me his picture asking if I could create a custom dog portrait etching from Ted’s photo.
How this Custom Dog Portrait of Ted was created:
So, I kept it a secret and quietly worked in the background, retouching the image of cute Ted they sent over. We had to add a little bit more detail in the top of his white fluffy fur. (See his original photo below.) Then I etched the image to a light-sensitive metal plate and inked the plate. The plate was paired with dampened fine art Italian paper and pressed together in an old-fashioned printing press giving Ted’s cute picture a fine art feel to it having an impression in paper like a letterpress with an ethereal, vintage type feel to it.
I signed Ted’s custom dog portrait, double matted the art, included a greeting card written just for Ted’s mom, packaged everything together in a beautiful gray case with ribbon, and shipped this special artwork off to surprise Ted’s mom. I received this message from her the other day: “Wow, just wow. I can’t thank you enough for my piece that you did of Ted from the DoD team. It’s amazing.” – Allison
